As a veteran software developer of 8 years experience and currently doing iOS apps development, you should start right away. And make at home in Android what you work on in the day at office. You're not as limited as you might think. A couple of years like this and you'll be a Rockstar who could 1 freelance 2 make an auto pilot app business 3 start a small consulting firm Sky is the limit my friend

Since you already know about Android, go for iOS! I have been working as an Android Dev (Android Only) for about 6 years now - And I regret it. As you grow your experience; you will be asked to play your role as lead full stack mobile developer. Which means you should be prolific in all mobile platforms (at least both android and ios) And rememeber, you should NEVER stick to one technology.
